Apparently we were extremely spoiled for the first week we were here. Come to find out, rice beans and peas will actually be our main staple. However, we do get some sort of meat once a week and you can go rolling. What's rolling you ask?? Walking to get a rolex. Pretty spiffy huh?! Rolex's are these incredible tortilla things that wrap up this omelet thing with peppers, cabbage, tomato, onion and probably something else too haha. In addition, there are also 4 canteens on campus that have a supply of pop(or soda depending on your preference), baked goods, samosas (yummmm) and other various items. The thing about food is there is always enough. Usually I have to ask for only a half portion because they give you so much! You can also buy fruits and veggies right outside the gaits for pretty inexpensive so there's plenty to supplement. The one thing that I find myself missing the most is crackers. Cheese-its, goldfish, wheat thins, saltines, you name it. The only thing kind of similar they have around here are biscuits which are basically variations of shortbread. OH! And, I never ever ever drink pop in the States but here, I have a Fanta basically daily.
Other than food, I still don't have a roommate, although I've heard rumors that she's on campus somewhere. But I do know that her name is Ruth and she is a Ugandan. But having a single room for the first week had been really nice to adjust and get settled in.
Some glimpses on daily life:
- We play cards most every night - ratscrew, speed, chance(which is a Ugandan version of Uno), Monopoly deal andddddddd turns out there are exactly four people that play Eurchre! (Although they will never replace the Uno crew ;)
- There is a tonnnnnnn of reading, although most of the books are actaully really good so it's enjoyable--as long as you don't put it off ha
- Worship services are super high energy and fun, and involve great dancing, shhh don't tell. :)
- My chaco tan is so flipping amazing
- Stupid, dumb, idiot, jerk are considered worse than swear words
- It's rather warm.
And here some pictures!
